CDL Training Requirements

Before beginning Class A or Class B CDL training at Summit Truck Driving Academy, students must meet licensing, medical, driving-record, education, and school eligibility requirements.

The purpose of reviewing these requirements before enrollment is simple: we want you to know whether you are eligible before you invest your time and tuition.

Not sure whether something in your history may affect your eligibility? Ask us – we’re here to help.

Before You Enroll: The Basic Requirements

Students must currently meet the following requirements before beginning Summit CDL training:

    • Be at least 18 years old
    • Hold a current Nevada driver’s license
    • Be a Nevada resident
    • Obtain a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) before enrolling
    • Pass the required DOT physical
    • Complete required drug testing
    • Have a high school diploma or GED
    • Meet Summit’s English-language requirement
    • Complete a background check
    • Have a driving record that meets Summit’s eligibility standards

Age and Commercial Learner’s Permit

Summit accepts students beginning at age 18. Commercial-driving privileges differ by age: drivers age 18 may qualify for intrastate commercial driving, while interstate commercial driving generally requires the driver to be at least 21.

Students must obtain their Commercial Learner’s Permit before enrolling. Summit can provide study materials to help prospective students prepare for the permit examination, but the permit itself must be secured before training begins.

Medical and Drug-Testing Requirements

Students must complete the required DOT physical and drug testing before beginning the program. Costs charged by outside organizations for these services are the student’s responsibility and are not included in Summit tuition.

Driving Record Requirements

Summit reviews each prospective student’s driving record before enrollment. Excessive moving violations, major accidents, DUI history, or an expired, suspended, or otherwise non-current license may affect eligibility. Summit currently uses a seven-year DUI look back period.

A driving-record issue does not necessarily mean you should assume you cannot pursue CDL training. Because eligibility can depend on the specific circumstances, Summit will discuss any considerations prior to you paying tuition so the school can help determine whether moving forward with Class A or Class B training makes sense for you.

Education and English Requirements

Summit currently requires students to have a high school diploma or GED and sufficient English-language ability to participate successfully in training and meet program requirements.

Commercial driver training requires students to understand technical information, safety instructions, road signs, vehicle terminology, inspection procedures, and testing requirements.

Background Check

A background check is required as part of Summit’s admissions process. Summit does not currently use a blanket criminal-history policy that automatically excludes every applicant with a particular type of record. Circumstances are reviewed case by case.

If you have something in your history that you believe could affect enrollment or future commercial-driving opportunities, discuss it with Summit before committing to training.

Ask Before You Spend Money

If you are uncertain about your driver’s license, driving record, medical eligibility, background, permit, or another requirement, contact Summit before paying tuition.

It is better to answer the question first than discover an eligibility problem after training has begun.

After You Meet the Requirements

Once your prerequisites are complete, the Summit training process progresses through classroom learning, skills training, behind-the-wheel road training, mock CDL testing, and the official DMV CDL skills test.
